It helps children with a wide range of conditions, and many children with no diagnosis at all, build the skills they need for everyday life.

Here are the conditions paediatric occupational therapists most often work with, and how OT helps each one. For a broader introduction, read what does an occupational therapist do?

1. Autism spectrum disorder

Many autistic children have sensory sensitivities, motor difficulties and challenges with self-care and transitions. OT helps with sensory regulation, fine motor skills, daily routines and play. It often works alongside speech therapy and ABA therapy.

2. ADHD

Children with ADHD may struggle with attention, sitting still, organisation and handwriting. OT uses movement and sensory strategies to support self-regulation, and teaches practical organisation skills for school and home.

3. Sensory processing difficulties

Some children over-react or under-react to sounds, textures, movement or touch. Occupational therapists use sensory integration therapy to help the nervous system process sensory information more effectively.

4. Developmental delay

When a child reaches motor, play or self-care milestones later than expected, OT helps them catch up through targeted, play-based activities. Early support usually brings the fastest progress.

5. Developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia)

Children with DCD find it hard to plan and coordinate movements, so they may seem clumsy and struggle with sports, dressing and handwriting. OT breaks skills into manageable steps and builds motor planning.

6. Cerebral palsy

OT helps children with cerebral palsy build hand function, posture for daily tasks and independence in self-care, often using adaptive equipment. It usually works alongside physiotherapy. See occupational therapy vs physiotherapy.

7. Down syndrome and genetic conditions

Low muscle tone and developmental differences are common in Down syndrome and many genetic conditions. OT supports fine motor skills, feeding, self-care and school readiness.

8. Learning difficulties

Children with dyslexia, dysgraphia or other learning difficulties often benefit from OT for handwriting, visual-perceptual skills and organisation.

9. Feeding difficulties

Some children are extremely picky, gag on textures or struggle to chew. OT, including oral-motor intervention, helps children accept new foods and develop safe eating skills.

10. Prematurity

Babies born early may have delays in motor development, feeding or sensory processing. OT supports their development through early intervention.

Children without a diagnosis

Many children in occupational therapy have no formal diagnosis. They may simply have messy handwriting, struggle with buttons, seem clumsy or find loud places overwhelming. If everyday tasks are harder than they should be, OT can help. Our list of age-by-age signs your child needs occupational therapy is a good starting point.

How OT works across conditions

Whatever the condition, occupational therapy follows the same steps:

Assessment of your child’s strengths and difficulties.

Goals tied to everyday life at home and school.

Play-based therapy that builds the underlying skills.

Parent training and home programmes so progress continues between sessions.

Regular reviews to track progress.

Occupational therapy for kids at Percept

At Percept Rehabilitation Center in Indirapuram, our occupational therapists work with children with all the conditions above. OT helps children build skills and cope better with daily life.

What age groups does pediatric occupational therapy cover?

Pediatric OT covers children from infancy through adolescence, with approaches adapted to each age.

Is occupational therapy helpful for picky eaters?

Yes, for children whose picky eating is severe or linked to sensory or oral-motor difficulties. OT helps them gradually accept new foods.

Can OT help with my child’s behaviour?

OT can help with behaviour linked to sensory overload, frustration with tasks or difficulty regulating emotions. For broader behavioural support, it often works alongside ABA or behaviour therapy.

[10

post-309","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-occupational-therapy

Occupational Therapy for Kids: 10 Conditions It Helps

<meta name="description" content="Occupational therapy for kids helps with autism, ADHD, sensory issues, developmental delay, cerebral palsy and more.
